Bruce Montagne (pronounced "mon-tayne") has been traveling for twenty years making images in some of the most beautiful locales in the northern United States and Canada. His journeys have taken him from the Badlands of South Dakota to the Northwest Territories' remote barrenlands to canoe 150 miles on one of North America's wildest rivers. Whether he is lying face to face with baby harp seals on pack ice in the Gulf of St. Lawrence or walking with grizzlies in the Yukon, he captures images transcending the visible. It was an area much closer to his home in Milford, Michigan, that captured his heart. For more than a dozen years he wandered the rugged shores of Lake Superior capturing thousands of landscape and resident wildlife images.
From snowshoeing in windchills of -85F to paddling its shores at +95F, the region holds an endless source of inspiration for him in all four seasons. The fruits of his labor can now be seen in the 160-page coffee table book "Lake Superior Secrets," published by Ann Arbor Media Group. Bruce is a story teller. He notes:
Montagne's images have been widely published in books, calendars, and magazines as well as greeting cards and postcards. His clients include Canadian Geographic, National Wildlife, Birder's World, Smithsonian, Sierra Club, Audubon, World Wildlife Fund, Northword Press, The Nature Conservancy and many others. Bruce is one of the featured photographers in the book, "The Best of Nature Photography," published by Amherst Media. His images have recieved awards in Nature's Best and National Parks magagines as well as the prestigious BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition. Montagne is now at work on text and layout of his next book for children. It is a true account of his time spent one spring with a family of red foxes in northern Ontario. ![]() Photo Credit: Kimberli Bindschatel |
